2 dead, 1 injured in shooting in Cullman County

NEW CANAAN, Ala. – Two men are dead and one person injured after a shooting in the New Canaan community in northeast Cullman County. The incident happened in the very early morning hours Saturday, Aug. 15 near a residence along County Road 1854.

Cullman County Coroner Jeremy L. Kilpatrick identified the victims as Levi Benjamin Lawrence, 24, of Cullman and Dalton Matthew Bannister, 36, of Blountsville. He said both men were pronounced dead at the scene.

Authorities have not released the identity of the suspect or suspects.

The Cullman County Sheriff’s Office (CCSO) said in a statement that a call was transferred to the CCSO from Blount County 911 regarding a possible shooting in the New Canaan community at approximately 1:30 a.m.

According to the statement, “CCSO deputies arrived at the residence along with officers from (the) Arab Police Department. Deputies and officers discovered two individuals that were deceased and another seriously injured at a location in Cullman County. Through the investigation it was determined there was an alteration in which firearms were discharged, which resulted in two individuals being deceased and another being seriously injured. The third individual is in a regional hospital.”

Cullman County Sheriff Matt Gentry said, “Investigators and deputies are actively working this case. We ask for prayers for the families and all involved. We will keep the public informed as more information develops.”
