HOLLY POND, Ala. – As the Aug. 25, 2020 Municipal Election approaches, The Tribune is holding Q&A sessions between candidates.

In Holly Pond, the only race on the ballot will be for Holly Pond Town Council, place 1. Incumbent Lou Thomas will face challenger Julie Ray.

Why did you choose to run in the 2020 race?

Thomas: “Because we have a lot of projects in the process now, and I would like to see the work be completed if possible. It means a lot to me.”

Ray: “As a lifelong resident of Holly Pond, I feel it is my time to be proactive in my hometown by working diligently to make Holly Pond a more brighter and beautiful place to live and raise a family.”

What would you like to do for Holly Pond if you’re elected?

Thomas: “The one thing I’d like to do is get our holly trees back at the park. We used to have a little grove down there, and for some reason they cut all of them down. Those trees are how we (the town) were named, so I’d like to put the holly trees back.”

Ray: “Holly Pond is a special place. The citizens deserve nothing but the best. I will make sure our town is constantly a beautiful place to live but also work to bring visitors in by having parks in a clean/functional order for tournaments to simply taking an evening walk.”

Are there any specific projects you’d like to work on if elected?

Thomas: “What we’ve got going right now is a pretty good plateful. We’ve got different things planned with the new property we just purchased, not just the senior citizens building, as well as another storm shelter.”

Ray: “There are several areas of concern that need to be handled when I am elected, but providing a clean/ safe environment in our town and parks will be a must. Holly Pond has a tremendous amount of potential for revenue through our parks. Our school parks, if more functional, could produce town revenue through different tournaments and events. I will work to make sure our schools have what they need to provide nothing but the best to accommodate our students in addition to visitors coming in to Holly Pond.”

Why do you think the people of Holly Pond should vote for you?

Thomas: “I’ve had some experience, and I’ve worked all my life. I was self-employed for 42 years, and 32 of those years were here in Holly Pond at the Holly Pond supermarket. I just retired, and I want to do all I can to improve wherever the need is. That’s what I ran for the first time, to try and see improvements in the town, and I feel like we’ve accomplished a lot in the last few years.”

Ray: “I am a hard worker and not afraid to get my hands dirty. It is time we move Holly Pond in the right direction and be proactive. I take a lot of pride in my work and I will be committed to making Holly Pond the best place to live in the WORLD!”
