Marie Jose West, 95, passed away Monday, July 20, 2020 at Rose Manor in Haleyville.
She was born Jan. 30, 1925 to Julian and Julie Desmary in Verviers, Belgium. Marie was the strongest, most independent, loving and accepting person. She loved her family, her friends, her homeland and the USA. She never met a stranger. A native of Belgium, she met Omar, the love of her life, during the liberation of Belgium, becoming a “war bride” of WWII.
With incredible strength she left her family and her country to start a new life in Haleyville, Alabama. She spoke no English, and with a little help from a neighbor she taught herself to speak by reading. She NEVER lost the accent as those who knew her know all too well! This independent nature lasted throughout her life.
A graveside service will be held Thursday, July 23, 2020 at 3 p.m. at Winston Memorial Cemetery. Rev. Nathan Carroll will officiate.
Marie is survived by her sons Jim West and his wife, Martha and Junior West and his wife, Glenda; 11 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband Rue Omar West; daughters Jeannie Barron and Tootsie Farris; parents Julian and Julie Hebert-Desmary; and sister Simone Poll.
