GARDEN CITY, Ala. – Oscar Goodwin has announced his candidacy for Garden City Town Council, place 5. The Municipal Election will take place Tuesday, Aug. 25, 2020.
Goodwin said of his decision to run: “My hometown of Garden City may be small, but we have an enormous sense of pride in our community, churches, businesses and each other. In the past, Garden City has experienced trying times such as the closing of our beloved elementary school, the pollution of the mighty Mulberry River and increase of residents’ utility bills. Also, criminal activities have become increasingly noticeable in our neighborhood. I know that we can do better for the present and future generations of Garden City. I know that we deserve better. Therefore, I am running for the position of Garden City Town Council, place 5, to achieve these goals by working with the town council and our community. Once elected, I pledge to chase and obtain every grant dollar available to enhance our city for the betterment of the citizens. I vow to never increase the citizens’ utility bills or taxes. I will be mindful and tough on crime within our community. All in all, if elected I will help the town of Garden City to become better than ever before.”
Goodwin addressed what he thinks makes him different from other candidates, saying, “I have a fresh perspective, a servant’s heart, and youthful energy to serve my hometown. As a supervising respiratory therapist, I daily see the ravages of COVID-19 and would be a vital asset for the council and our community. I have the knowledge and experience of a medical frontline health care worker to manage with not only the current pandemic but any emergency that may arise.”
He continued, “Most of the voters may already know who I am. I have been a lifelong citizen of the town of Garden City. I am the sixth generation of my family that has called Garden City their permanent home. I can be seen taking walks with my dog around town, shopping at our local businesses, religiously attending church at Garden City First Baptist, and regularly go to town council meetings. My firm educational foundation was formed and molded by the excellent faculty at Garden City Elementary School. The love of learning was instilled within me during my formative years which inspired me to seek a higher education. I have led adult Bible studies on Wednesday night services. Also, I was a children’s Sunday school teacher. My life’s dedication can be summed up in one bible verse, Psalms 100:2: ‘Serve the Lord with gladness.’”
