CULLMAN, Ala. – Summertime instantly gets cooler when you’re able to enjoy refreshing frozen treats. Local favorite Frios Gourmet Pops recently unveiled its annual summer flavor- watermelon.

“We are entering our third summer season with Frios,” said Co-Owner Kristy Keiffer. “Watermelon has been available each summer. It’s always debuted prior to July 4.”

On what makes this seasonal flavor unique, she said, “Our melons are locally-sourced and fresh off the fields of our Alabama farmers! At Frios, we believe our quality starts with using only the freshest ingredients. Provided melons are available, Watermelon should be produced thru the next month. On social media, we have shared some of the ‘behind the scenes’ pictures and videos. It’s a really cool thing to see these massive crates of watermelons be hand-cut and juiced. With only 70 calories and three ingredients, adults can feel good about giving this pop to their kids. A second grader can read the ingredients list. I think we can all agree it’s a good thing when an elementary student can pronounce the ingredients in a product.”

She continued, “Watermelon is a fruity flavor. We all know Jay (Keiffer), aka ‘Pop Guy,’ leans into the fruity flavors. And, although Pineapple is his favorite, Watermelon is a close top three. Personally, I’m more of a dessert pop gal – Strawberry Shortcake (made with ‘Bama berries) is delectable. Summer is the season for fruity pops, for sure. Our Pineapple Mango, PomBerry and Tamarind have been enjoyed by many. About two weeks ago, we debuted a Margarita pop. It’s a lemon-lime palate pleaser. In case folks are wondering, all our pops are family-friendly thus, yes, Margarita is non-alcoholic! We ordered five Margarita cases initially (240 pops), and we’ve reordered this week.”

Pops with a Purpose

“COVID-19 forced us to rethink several parts of our ‘Pops with a Purpose’ ministry,” said Keiffer. “As much as Pop Guy and I enjoy personally serving guests, we’ve now realized we can’t be everywhere, but maybe our delicious pops can be places we cannot! We’ve listened to the requests of our Frios guests and we’re making intentional efforts to offer Frios in surrounding communities/Smith Lake. It’s been our experience these partnerships are win-win. Anyone (or any) business interested in a potential pop partnership (and likes alliteration) can reach out to kristy@friospops.com.”

Frios Gourmet Pops is open Sunday and Tuesday-Friday from 2-7 p.m. and Saturday from 11 a.m.-7 p.m. The Cullman location is located at 112 Clark St.
