From the Files of 1954:
Killed instantly at 6:30 Wednesday morning was Carl Milligan, 35, of Bangor. The accident occurred at the Garden City Heading Company, where he was employed.
A fly wheel broke and threw pieces of the wheel and belt through the top rafters, about 30 feet high. Mr. Milligan, who was nearby, was thrown against a rafter of the building and killed instantly.
Surviving are his widow, Mrs. Eula Milligan; his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Walter Milligan, of Bangor; five sisters, Mrs. Anita Gardner, Mrs. Eldrell Watson, Mrs. Wynelle Reid and Mrs. Nora James, all of Birmingham and Mrs. Corene Lewis, of Hayden.
Funeral services will be held on Friday afternoon at 2 o’clock at the Bangor Baptist Church, with Reverend Mack Howell officiating and Moss Service of Hanceville directing interment in the Bangor Cemetery.
Eighty 4-H Club officers met on October 30 at Klein’s Creamery for the first County Council meeting of the year. They elected the following Council officers: President, Marie Peinhardt, Vice-President, Allan Fox, Secretary, Annette Gibbs, Song Leaders, Sue Whaley, Patricia Peinhardt and Martha Nell Webb and Reporter, Fred Harbinson.
Sunday Fire Victim
Jesse Thomas Woodard, 86, died at his residence in the high school addition about 9 o’clock on Sunday morning, the victim of a fire. Mr. Woodard was found at the door. It is believed that he was trying to escape the burning building and when he opened the wood door the flames enveloped him. The screen door was still fastened.
Mr. Woodard, whose wife died two years ago, lived alone. He was a Mason, past worshipful master of the Falkville Lodge, an Odd Fellow and a deacon of the Etha Baptist Church.
Surviving are twelve of his thirteen children. They are Paul and Homer Woodard, Mrs. Cora Smith and Mrs. Esther Lewis, all of Cullman; Tom Woodard, of Tuscumbia; Buster Woodard, of Haleyville; Charlie Woodard, of Fort Payne; George Woodard, of Gadsden; Reuben Woodard, of Eva; Mrs. Minnie Long, of Hartselle; Mrs. Velma Boyd, of White City and Mrs. Lessie Clark, of Huntsville. One son, Robert Woodard, is deceased. Also surviving are 42 grandchildren.
Funeral services were held at Etha at 2:00 p.m. on Monday, with Reverend P.U. Green and Reverend Jimmie Rodgers officiating and Moss Service directing interment in the Etha Cemetery.
Dennis Woodard, a grandson, sang “Going Home.”
