HANCEVILLE, Ala. – Early Tuesday morning, Hanceville firefighters were called to a structure fire off Stadium Street near the Hanceville High School baseball field. There they found a house fully engulfed in flames, its roof already burned. Responding with them were units and personnel from the Garden City and Johnson’s Crossing fire departments, as well as Hanceville Police and Cullman EMS. The fire was quickly contained and limited to that one site, but the house was destroyed.

The Hanceville department was able to contact the property owner. Hanceville Assistant Fire Chief Bart Absher reported that no one was in the house, and that it has been abandoned for many years, without power or water. Due to the already extensive damage and apparent presence of asbestos in the older structure, firefighters did not enter but worked to contain the blaze from outside.

Absher said no firefighters were injured. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
