CULLMAN, Ala. – Tuesday morning yielded a good time for Friends of the Public Libraries of Cullman County (FPLCC) and the Cullman County Department of Human Resources (DHR). The two were the beneficiaries of the Succulent & Perennial Plant Sale at the Festhalle. The sale was made possible by generous donor Calera McHenry, who grew all of the plants.

“The Friends are so thankful for everyone who came to grow with us today in celebration of Calera’s guidance and generosity in giving us these plants,” smiled FPLCC Secretary Renee Welsh. “All the proceeds are going to two great beneficiaries, DHR who supports children, and the Friends of the Library for trying to do the same!”

Cullman County Public Library System Director Sharon Townson also expressed her gratitude.

“We’re thankful for Calera McHenry,” she said. “We’re very thankful for our Friends group that is taking time to do this, to support the library, which in turn helps the community and I think it’s especially important right now with all the things that we’re going through. Our summer library program is going to look a little different this year, and this is going to be a huge benefit to help us get those materials out into the kids’ hands and allow them to enjoy some similar activities.”

Townson shared some details on the library’s upcoming “Take and Make” series, in which parents and their children pick up materials from the library and make the projects at home.

The first program, “Let’s Plant,” starts next week, June 1.

Let’s Plant materials will include seeds, soil, newspaper sheets and a ruler for kids to keep track of the progress of the plants they’ll grow.

Townson said future programs will include moon sand, finger puppets and binary coding.

Welsh said the library also obtained a $1,500 Dollar General Literacy Foundation grant that will help fund “STEM projects by the library, the Pre-K 1,000 books program and incentives for the Cullman Library’s children’s area.”
