COLONY, Ala. – During their regular meeting Tuesday evening, Colony Mayor Donnis Leeth and all four members of the Colony Town Council declared their intentions to run for re-election in the Aug. 25, 2020 Municipal Election. Town Clerk Patricia Ponder made sure that each official had the necessary candidate registration packet, and the group discussed the schedule and deadline for qualification.
Leeth has taken pride in bringing a Dollar General to the community, a major piece of his first administration’s platform, and he stated that his second term will see a Jack’s restaurant come to the area. He expressed confidence that he will get the chance.
After the meeting, Leeth told The Tribune, “I’m running again for the mayor of the Town of Colony. I don’t know if there’s opposition or not, but whoever it is, I’m mighty satisfied that I’m going to beat them, bad! Wasting your time running against me down in the Colony, because I love them, they love me, and I’m doing everything for them I can, and still going to do something for them.”
Council business
During the council’s work session, Councilman Melvin Hammond said water system repairs in the gym have been completed except for one fixture. Once that is done, the building will need to be cleaned, and Hammond reported that some local residents have volunteered to help with the cleanup in order to get the gym open as soon as possible.
Leeth and Hammond discussed the need for kids to behave themselves at the gym. Hammond said he would draw up rules, and stated he would close the gym again if rules were not followed.
Bathroom repairs have been made at the library, but a leak remains. Hammond contacted a company to come and locate the leak so the last needed repairs at the library can be completed and the facility reopened.
Councilwoman Ethel Alexander told the council she was pleased with census efforts during door-to-door visits last week that resulted in around 25 households being added to the town’s list of completed census reports. She is continuing to work on the census.
Leeth shared that the Town has received a 50-inch television it will give away in a drawing from names of Colony residents who have completed their census forms. He hopes the raffle will encourage even more participation.
Colony’s census response rate is currently 57.4%, within 1% of the state rate.
Alexander also said she is trying to come up with a plan for engaging children in educational activities through the summer break.
The council heard from a local resident who hopes to purchase a parcel of Town land adjoining his own property. The council took no action and will look into the matter further at a future meeting.
The Colony Town Council meets for a work session at 5 p.m. the second and fourth Tuesdays of each month at Colony Town Hall, with the council meeting following. The public is invited to attend.
