CULLMAN, Ala. – Members of Cullman Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Post 2214, its Ladies’ Auxiliary and other volunteers on Monday placed 328 crosses along U.S. Highway 31 across from Sportsman Lake, to honor Cullman County’s fallen warriors from World War I through the current war on terrorism.
Project coordinator Rick Leigeber told The Tribune, “We’re honoring all of Cullman County’s finest.”
Ed White loaned use of the property near his store, Ed White Jewelers. Leigeber, Jerry Raley and Ray Ainsworth made the crosses; Caroline Leigeber, Rachel Monk and Brian Monk did the lettering.
Members and volunteers will return Tuesday to place flags on the crosses, and will place flags on veterans’ graves and along the U.S. Highway 31 median later this week. Look for a full story coming soon.
