CULLMAN, Ala. – After Governor Kay Ivey issued her amended Safer at Home Order last Friday, many local businesses began looking forward to reopening – including gyms and fitness centers. While many people have found ways to keep in shape and continue working out while at home, many are still eager to return to their preferred gyms and not let their memberships go to waste. For those who intend to return as soon as possible, here is what you need to know about Planet Fitness, Anytime Fitness and the Cullman Wellness & Aquatic Center.

Anytime Fitness (1845 Patriot Dr. SW)

Anytime Fitness is open and has resumed its normal operating hours. A spokesperson for the business said it is “maintaining a high standard of cleanliness” and is not limiting the number of people allowed inside at once, saying there are never so many people inside that the social distancing rules cannot be followed. “There hasn’t been a moment where we’ve had to make people wait outside.”

Cullman Wellness and Aquatic Center (1636 Field of Miracles Dr. SW)

CWAC is open and will be operating from 4:30 a.m. to 7 p.m. every day. The CWAC Facebook page lists a few guidelines for visitors:

  • Towel services, bottle fillers and water fountains temporarily discontinued; members encouraged to bring own water and sweat towels if needed.
  • No cycle classes being held; other fitness classes continuing as scheduled.
  • Indoor pool open for water aerobics and lap swim only.
  • Indoor & outdoor pool lap swimming guidelines:
    • One swimmer per lane
    • Maximum of one hour allowed in the water
    • Bring own equipment; avoid shared equipment
    • Locker rooms are open to enter the pool area
    • Patrons will not be allowed to re-enter locker rooms after swimming; they must dry off on deck and exit through aqua room.

Cullman Parks, Recreation & Sports Tourism (CPRST) Executive Director Zac Wood is very enthusiastic about the reopening, saying, “We are excited that Governor Ivey and the Alabama Department of Public Health have allowed us to reopen the Cullman Wellness and Aquatic Center.  We look forward to continuing to serve the citizens of our community through our facilities, programs and events.”

Christy Turner, CPRST development director, also commented, “We have looked forward to this day for weeks now!  Our staff has put in countless hours cleaning and making sure our facility was ready to go the minute we got the nod from the State. I am not sure who was more excited when we opened – us or our members! Hopefully, everyone recognizes how important recreational activities are to keeping our community healthy both mentally and physically. We can’t wait to open up fully so the community can get out and live!”

She continued, “While we have not been physically open we are continuing to engage our members and the community by offering ZOOM fitness classes, posting workout routines across our social media platforms and offering tips on staying healthy and mentally fit.

“We are continuing to reach our seniors by contacting them and checking in on them while the Donald E. Green Active Adult Center is closed. It is like family at the Center and we want them to know they are not alone. We are in this together and will get through this and create something better for everyone!”

Further information and updates about the center’s policies can be found on the CWAC Facebook page or at www.cullmanwellness.com/covid-19.

Planet Fitness (1727 Second Ave. SW)
