CULLMAN, Ala. – Friday morning, county school administrators and central office staff of the Cullman County Board of Education (CCBOE) cooked and packed hamburgers and hot dogs for health care workers at Cullman Regional, delivering them to the hospital in time for lunch.
CCBOE Superintendent Dr. Shane Barnette told The Tribune, “I really want to brag on our administrators. I mean, they dedicate their lives to serving young people and now, when they have a little bit of extra time- because the young people are not actually on campuses- during a Zoom principal meeting this week, (Fairview High School Principal) Dr. (Chris) Gambrill came up with the idea and all the other principals jumped on board, to ‘Hey, let’s serve the health care workers at CRMC.
“All of our high school principals went out, along with our other principals, and started talking to their vendors. Their vendors started donating stuff, and we started gathering; we got a document where all the principals put what they could get donated. Then, before you know it, we had enough food and fixings and so forth to bag up almost 450 lunches. We’re going to bag them up and deliver them to CRMC to feed all their employees today.”
Barnette pointed out that everything was donated or was paid for with administrators’ and staffers’ personal funds. No Child Nutrition Program food or funds were used.
The Cullman County Cattlemen’s and Cattlewomen’s Association loaned the cooks a large grill, and various food supplies came from a number of entities including Warehouse Discount Groceries, Hopper’s Family Market, S&S Groceries, Foodland, Coca-Cola, Panera Bread and Jack’s.
