ARKADELPHIA, Ala. – Saturday, Arkadelphia residents discovered a newly forming pothole on County Road 8. At first, the spot appeared small, but when the pavement began to sink in around it, witnesses discovered a substantial amount of earth washed out under the asphalt, creating a sinkhole in the road. The Cullman County Sheriff’s Office, local firefighters and a Cullman County Road Department crew responded shortly after 5 p.m.
Local resident Jennifer Bischoff, who called in the issue, reported that the crew found a damaged pipe beneath the road that caused the soil washout.
Linda Prater, who lives approximately 100 yards from the spot, commended the road crew’s response, saying, “They came out within 30 minutes of her calling.”
Prater also told The Tribune, “They worked into the night last night. They had to dig up the whole thing and start from scratch. And they had the whole crew out there: I think there were four trucks, and I walked down there and saw about seven men.”
The crew completed repairs around 9 p.m.
