MONTGOMERY, Ala. – Schools, businesses, restaurants and sports are shutting down across the country but it’s still awards season for local basketball teams. The Alabama Sports Writers Association is releasing its finalists for the Player of the Year awards and last year’s 2A Girls Player of the Year, Cold Springs senior Elizabeth Hill, is once again a finalist. The senior forward and reigning 2A Player of the Year helped lead the Lady Eagles to a 31-5 record, back to back Northwest Regional titles and a runner-up finish in class 2A this season. Hill also eclipsed the 2,000-career point mark during a win over Vinemont in January.
The Player of the Year winners will be announced next week with Super All-State Teams being released shortly after. This year’s Mr. and Miss Basketball and will be named in two weeks but the Mr. and Miss Basketball banquet scheduled for April 7 has been canceled.
Statement from Alabama Sports Writers Association president Creg Stephenson on the 2020 Mr./Miss Basketball banquet:
“It is with regret that the Alabama Sports Writers Association announces the cancellation of the 2020 Mr./Miss Basketball banquet and awards ceremony due to ongoing concerns regarding the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. We had hoped to go on as planned with the event, or at least postpone it to another date. However, with each passing day, it has become more and more apparent that either option would not be feasible, both for health and safety reasons and due to the constraints of the calendar. We still hope we will be able to publicly honor this year’s Mr. and Miss Basketball recipients at a later date and will make the appropriate announcement when more information is available.”
