ADDISON, Ala. – On an absolutely beautiful day for baseball, Addison hosted county rival Lynn and Walker County foe Oakman for a pair of varsity matchups. Unfortunately for the home crowd, the weather was the only thing that turned out great for the Dawgs today. Addison lost the opener to Lynn 5-2 and the Bulldogs fell in their second game of the evening 17-5.
Lynn 5 – Addison 2
Lynn jumped on Addison starter Brett Smith for four runs in the first three innings. Lynn batters collected five hits and three walks against Smith. “State Farm” Jake Wilson came in for Smith and was able to slow down the Bear Bats. Wilson tossed four innings of 1-run ball, giving up just three hits in the process.
Addison’s offense struggled against Lynn’s Brandon Hill. Addison could only garner four hits and two runs for the game against Hill. Jessie “Rooster” Brock had two hits, scored a run and stole a base. Nelson “Crusher” Martin had a hit and RBI and Will Tuggle produced Addison’s other hit in the loss.
Oakman 17 – Addison 5
If you can think of something bad that could happen on the ball field, it probably happened to Addison during its second game of the day against Oakman. Errors, passed balls, hit batters, stranding runners in scoring position and seeing-eye hits all plagued the Bulldogs in the pound.
Oakman touched up Addison starter Colton Tyree for six runs and four walks in his first inning of work. Tyree had been outstanding through the first part of the season but did not have the feel for the ball Saturday. None of the Bulldog pitchers could slow down the Wildcat bats as they batted around three times in five innings. Addison also committed a season-high seven errors in the field, hit three batters and threw four wild pitches. Addison was down 17-0 going into the bottom of the fifth inning and managed to cut into the lead but it was too little, too late and Oakman held on to win it 17-5.
The bright spot for Addison, if there was one, was that the young men didn’t quit and weren’t shut out. Jessie Brock posted a hit, an RBI and a run scored. Colton Tyree had two hits and a run scored, Nelson Martin had a hit with two RBIs and a run scored and Matt Cagle added a hit for the Bulldogs in the loss.
Addison falls to 4-3 with the losses and will look to get back on the winning track against Good Hope Tuesday at Addison. The young Dawgs need to remember that all teams have days like today, but they are few and far between.
