PREP SOFTBALL: Lady Warriors rally to knock off Brewer 11-6

WEST POINT, Ala. – After a week soaked in rain across the state, the West Point Lady Warriors were able to get back on the field Friday afternoon to host the Lady Patriots of Brewer for an area matchup. West Point fell behind 6-0 in the second inning but after chipping away at the lead through the third inning, the Lady Warriors pulled ahead for good in the fourth and finished off the comeback with an 11-6 win over the Lady Patriots.

After a scoreless first inning, Brewer took advantage of three errors and four base hits to build a 6-0 lead in the top half of the second. The Lady Warriors began to chip away in their half of the second. Back to back singles from Braelee Quinn and Gracie Thompson put runners on for West Point and the Lady Warriors had got runners on first and third later in the inning. Kayleigh Hayney singled into right field to bring two runs across the plate for West Point and cut the lead to four runs going into the third.

Carlie Wilkins kept the Lady Patriots off the board in the top of the third and the Lady Warriors tacked on more runs in the bottom half of the inning. Molly Pendley singled and stole second to put a runner in scoring position Wilkins drove her in with single to make it a 6-3 game. An error allowed another run to cross the plate for West Point and Thompson singled to right field to score Quinn and cut the lead to 6-5 at the end of three.

The Lady Warriors took their first lead of the night in their half of the fourth inning when Hayney and Bethany Minck led off the inning with a pair of singles and Lexi Shadix doubled into center field to score them both and give West Point a 7-6 advantage. After Pendley walked, Wilkins singled to score Shadix, stretching the lead to two runs and an RBI single off the bat of Thompson made it 9-6 going into the fifth.

After a scoreless fifth inning, Pendley blasted a 2-run shot over the center field fence to add to the lead in the bottom of the sixth and the Lady Warriors put away the final three outs in the top of the seventh to finish off the comeback with an 11-6 win.

Thompson, (three hits), Shadix (one hit), Pendley (home run), Hayney (two hits) and Wilkins (two hits) all drove in a pair of runs for West Point in the win. Minck added two more hits and after falling behind 6-0 in the first two innings, Wilkins tossed five scoreless frames and struck out eight batters in the come from behind win.  

West Point will compete in this year’s Wallace State Tournament at Heritage Park tomorrow.

Albertville 11 – Fairview 2 (varsity softball)

The Lady Aggies faced Albertville Friday afternoon and after falling behind 6-0 in the second inning, Fairview was never able to bounce back, falling 11-2. Solo home runs by Rebkah Deblanc and Allyson Wooten put Fairview on the board in the loss and Kaitlyn Benson added a pair of hits for the Lady Aggies as well.
