ADDISON, Ala. — Addison hosted the 4A Danville Hawks (1-3) on a breezy evening at the Dawg Pound and the Bulldogs started their big senior right hander Luke “Doc” Waldrep who brought his dominating stuff into the game. Waldrep entered the game with a 1-0 record and 19 strikeouts in only nine innings of work and he tacked on seven more shutout innings and 12 more strikeouts Friday night. As if on cue, Waldrep struck out two of the first three batters he faced.
Danville countered with Dez Morrow on the mound who wanted to prove that Waldrep wasn’t the only guy who knew how to pitch, and Morrow struck out two of his own in the bottom of the first.
Danville was scoreless in the second inning and Addison took advantage of some Morrow wildness to plate two runs. Jake Wilson and Will Tuggle opened the frame with back to back singles and a wild pitch moved the runners to second and third. Matt Cagle then walked to load the bases with no one out and Brody Dollar put one in play to score Wilson. Another wild pitch scored Tuggle and that gave Addison a 2-0 lead going into the third.
The score remained locked at 2-0 until the bottom of the fourth inning when Addison scored again. Tuggle was hit by a pitch and after he stole second. Dollar collected his second RBI of the game to give Addison a 3-0 advantage and Waldrep kept the Hawks off the board the rest of the way, securing the win for the Bulldogs.
Waldrep got his second victory on the year and a complete game shutout. This was Waldrep’s second complete game and second shutout on the year after striking out 12, walking one and allowing just one hit.
Tuggle led Addison with a pair of hits in the win and Dollar added a pair of RBIs. Wilson added the only other hit of the night for the Bulldogs.
Addison Head Coach John Everett was proud of his team’s effort on the offensive end, doing just enough to help Waldrep and get the win.
“Pleased with our effort and though we struggled hitting, their pitcher (Morrow) was mostly to blame for that. He kept the ball around the plate,” Everett said. “We were able to steal four bases tonight and took advantage of the few mistakes that (Morrow) made.”
Addison improves to 4-1 with the win while Danville falls to 1-4. Addison plays two games on Saturday, one against county rival Lynn and the other against Oakman.
