FAIRVIEW, Ala. – Fairview Theatre Works director Mark Dobbs, who is directing a spring production of “Little Shop of Horrors” with a cast drawn from multiple Cullman County schools, this week announced a countywide contest to design the cover for the show’s hand-out program. For you artsy types, there’s even a little fortune to go with the fame: the student whose artwork is chosen will receive a $100 prize.

Contest rules

  • Only students currently enrolled in Cullman County schools are eligible.
  • The contest is open to only those students in grades 9-12.
  • All entries must be the original work of the student who submits it.
  • All entries must be hand-drawn or painted by the student (no images from the internet).
  • Students should not copy logos or artwork from previous productions of the play.
  • In no way should any student infringe on copyright laws (it is the student’s responsibility to know what works are copyrighted).
  • Because the winner’s artwork will be scanned to be included in the “Playbill,” all artwork should be submitted on 8 ½” by 11” paper (or be able to be trimmed to that size).
  • The winner will be chosen by the director and cast of the play. Their decision is final and no appeal will be considered.
  • Anyone with questions should email Dobbs at mdobbs@ccboe.org.
  • All entries become the property of Fairview Theatre Works.

What should the cover look like?

Said Dobbs, “I want to leave the contest vague enough for all the artists to be creative. I recommend looking at images online of movie and play posters from the past to familiarize yourself with the play and what it typically looks like. Most put the man-eating plant (Audrey II) on the cover. Many use primary colors of red, yellow and green (but you don’t have to). Many make any letters in red seem to be dripping with blood (but you don’t have to). Look around, learn about the play, be creative and have fun.”

Submitting your art

Entries can be submitted in one of two ways:

  • Students can scan their artwork, save it in JPEG, GIF or PNG format, and email it to mdobbs@ccboe.org. One of the teachers at your school might be able to help you with this.
  • Students can mail or bring their artwork (or a color copy) to Fairview High School. The address is 841 Welcome Road, Cullman, AL 35058.

All entries should be accompanied with the following information:

  • Student’s name
  • Student’s school
  • Student’s grade
  • Student’s CCBOE email address
  • A contact phone number

Schedule

The contest opened Wednesday, Feb. 19 and submissions will be accepted through Friday, March 6. The winner will be announced Monday, March 9.
