CULLMAN, Ala. – A Cullman County man was arrested in the early morning hours of Thursday, Feb. 13 after entering two homes in the neighborhood of 11th Street Southeast and being held at gunpoint by a resident.
According to Cullman Police Department Capt. Gene Bates, Chad Steven Daugherty, 29, was charged with two counts of third-degree burglary.
Capt. Bates said residents alerted the CPD about an hour before the arrest, after several of them saw a man lurking around the neighborhood.
“The officers had been down there searching around the area for about an hour when a call from another residence came in,” he said. “The male resident saw that Officer Roy Bates had arrived, and when he opened his door to talk to Officer Bates, that’s when the suspect ran inside his home. The female resident held the suspect at gunpoint and told him to get out. The suspect complied and walked outside, where Officer Bates also held him at gunpoint. He complied with Officer Bates’ commands.”
Capt. Bates said the officers on the scene, based on the suspect’s actions and statements, felt Daugherty might have been under the influence of drugs.
“The officers called Cullman EMS and the suspect was transported to Cullman Regional for treatment,” he said.
Capt. Bates commended the female resident for showing restraint with her weapon.
“This could have easily been a different story,” he said. “Someone comes into your home…It was obvious they used discretion. If they hadn’t used the discretion they used, it could have been a real different story.”
Capt. Bates said surveillance video showed Daugherty had also entered the basement or storage area of another home prior to the arrest.
