Funny Things from Yesterday: Shopping at K-Mart with our granddaughter

Our little granddaughter, Leanna, was a gentle, pleasant and mild child- except inside a shopping mall or a large department store. Then, she was like her Granny and went completely wild. She wanted to see everything, try everything and go in every direction at once. Have you ever tried to catch a speeding bullet? That would probably have been easier than catching Leanna once she was loose.

One time Leanna was at our house to spend the night with us and we decided to go to K-Mart that evening for some shopping. Once inside the store, Leanna headed straight to the toy department. How a 2 year old knows how to find the toy section is beyond me. I guess it must be instinct.

Leanna looked at several items and then spotted a little three-wheeler on the floor. It was just the right size for her to ride. She mounted the three-wheeler and down the aisle she went at full speed. After she had ridden this one for a while, she saw another tricycle on the bottom shelf that had clean white wheels on it. She jumped off of the one she had and quickly pulled the one with the white wheel off the shelf. I didn’t want her to get the white wheels dirty or skinned up. So, I tried to get her off the tricycle. Each time I lifted her she would lock her little legs around the tricycle, and she wouldn’t come off. After a couple of tries to get her off she started screaming at top of her voice.

Granny heard the commotion and came quickly around to help me. There we were, two red-faced adults trying to pry a 2-year-old child off of a tricycle, and every eye in K-Mart watching us. Life can be interesting shopping with a very active grandchild.

Leanna is grown now and has 10-month-old twin boys. I think she will have some interesting days and things ahead for her.
