CULLMAN, Ala. – Flourish of Cullman on Saturday evening hosted a fundraiser, the “Roaring 20s” Bingo Night and Silent Auction, at Goat Island Brewing. The organization, which helps people with developmental disabilities gain skills for independent living and employment, is raising funds for its current housing project, a duplex near Berlin. The annual Goat Island event is one of two large-scale fundraisers that support Flourish’s programs. Attendees, many of whom came dressed in period attire, enjoyed a catered dinner and drinks, contests featuring 1920s trivia, 1920s music and, of course, bingo and a silent auction with a wide selection of prizes.
This year’s event was sponsored by Lee Powell of Country Financial and was the first sponsored Flourish fundraiser.
Flourish Co-Founder/Executive Director Melissa Dew talked to The Tribune about where the money raised Saturday night will go.
“It’s going to go to several different things,” she said. “We just moved into our duplex, and the other side is what we’re remodeling now, for an independent living skills apartment. We would like to use the funds from tonight to actually fix that to be able to help people that want to live independently.”
Dew took a moment to commend the people who helped make the event a success.
“Our sponsor, Lee Powell, has been great in helping us out. Our board of directors have been amazing: they have sold tickets, they came out today at 12 o’clock and started helping us put this together, brought in some of their own money. They worked on projects the last two months to get this happening,” she said. “All of our staff is here tonight, so they’re actually helping and engaging with the people in the community. I always say, ‘Teamwork makes the dream work,’ and that’s exactly what we do on a daily basis, is we all work together to improve lives of people with differing abilities.”
