CULLMAN, Ala. – A magical night was had Friday, courtesy of the Cullman High School Jazz Band, at the 24th annual Big Band Dance at Stone Bridge Farms. This year’s dance was dedicated to Cullman area World War II veterans, and several were in attendance as guests of honor. The USO-themed soirée brought together all generations for a night filled with great music and dancing.
The CHS Jazz Band, under the direction of Christopher Smith, kicked the night off with Glenn Miller’s “In the Mood.” The crowd favorite filled the dance floor, which stayed full until the end. With tunes from Duke Ellington and Etta James, one felt transported back to a simpler time. To say the band was great would be an understatement.
Smith explained, “Students in grades 9-12 audition for the Cullman Jazz Band each year, and the students with the highest audition results are selected for the ensemble. The jazz band begins working on some of the repertoire for the Big Band Dance in the fall, but intense rehearsals on the selections to be performed begin in January. It is very challenging for any musician to prepare two hours’ worth of music, but for student-musicians it is a great achievement. This shows the hard work and dedication of our students, and demonstrates their commitment to excellence.”
Smith continued, “I am very proud to be associated with these wonderful young people. The Big Band Dance is a great opportunity for our community to enjoy live music, dancing and fellowship together. We were very honored to provide entertainment for everyone in the community, but especially for our WWII veterans in attendance. They are true American heroes.”
As the band took a short break, the guests of honor were recognized for their bravery and dedicated service to our country. Those in attendance included Joe Hayden, Roy Drinkard, Talmadge Drake, Henry Hardie Cornett, Julian Campbell and Spud Campbell.
Several were unable to attend but were also honored including Thurman Ryan, Herbert Johnson, George Mills, Burt McGriff and John Tillman.
The students from Cullman Middle School and Cullman High School enjoyed dancing and meeting with the distinguished guests as many made a point to visit each veteran and thank him for his service.
Drake said he particularly loved “The Tennessee Waltz,” one of several songs featuring jazz vocalist Madison Smith. Many of the veterans took to the dance floor and even submitted a few music requests. The veterans had a wonderful time and several vowed to be back next year.
