Obituary: Wayoma “Dean” Meigs

Wayoma “Dean” Elam Meigs, 85, of the Water Valley community entered into rest Saturday, Feb.8, 2020 at Decatur Morgan Hospital.

Dean was born Dec.29, 1934 in Addison, Alabama.

She was a longtime member of Sardis Baptist Church No. 2, where she played both organ and piano.  She loved to sing and was the choir director at Country Living, the assisted living facility where she resided, and was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star for over 50 years.  Dean enjoyed all kinds of crafts, especially sewing and crocheting, and was an excellent cook. Her family has many fond memories of her cooking, in particular her homemade biscuits and gravy, and yellow cake with chocolate icing.  Dean loved her family, especially her granddaughters.

Visitation will be held Monday, Feb. 10, 2020 from 6-8 p.m. at Sardis Baptist Church No. 2 in Addison, where services will be held Tuesday at 11 a.m. She will lie in state from 10-11 a.m. Brother William McClellan and Brother Jeff Wiggins will officiate. Burial will be in the adjoining cemetery.

Dean is survived by her sons Rickey Meigs and his wife Sheila and Rodger Meigs and his wife Penny; her granddaughters Rachel (Jordan) King, Hannah (James) Couch, Abbey Meigs, and Lana (Vance) Hines; great-grandchildren Presley, Grayson, Emmy and Elly; step-sister Kathy (Johnny) Green; sister-in-law Shirley Sweatmon; and her friends and the staff at Country Living.

She was preceded in death by her husband Floye Meigs; parents Waymon and Dorsey Freeman Elam; step-mother Marge Elam Burrows; brother and sister-in-law Olen and Carolyn Elam; and step-brother Lavon Sweatmon.
