Man with Cullman County ties charged with capital murder of Kimberly police officer

JEFFERSON COUNTY, Ala. – Preston Cheyenne Johnson, 37, a man listed in a late 2019 arrest report as a resident of Good Hope, has reportedly been arrested in Walker County as a suspect in the overnight shooting of a Kimberly police officer on Interstate 65 near exit 281, just south of Cullman County. The officer was transported to UAB Hospital in Birmingham.

WHNT 19 News in Huntsville reported early Wednesday morning, “According to booking at the Jefferson County Jail, suspect Preston Cheyenne Johnson was booked at 5:39 a.m. and charged with capital murder of a police officer.

Johnson has a lengthy record of drug charges at least back to 2009, including multiple drug possession and distribution charges in Morgan, Winston and Cullman Counties. 

Johnson was arrested in Cullman in December 2016 on two counts of unlawful distribution of a controlled substance when he sold methamphetamine to Cullman Police Department narcotics investigators (www.cullmantribune.com/2016/12/02/winston-county-man-arrested-for-meth-distribution/). He was listed in the arrest report as a Winston County resident. He had just been released from Talladega Federal Correctional Institute two weeks earlier.

In June 2017, Johnson was arrested between Jones Chapel and West Point by the Cullman County Sheriff’s Office (CCSO) for possession of drug paraphernalia and possession with intent to distribute a controlled substance.

On Oct. 31, 2019, Johnson was arrested in Good Hope for the theft of a 1998 Corvette from Winston County (www.cullmantribune.com/2019/10/31/good-hope-man-charged-in-connection-with-stolen-car-drugs/). At the time of his arrest, he was found in possession of 13 grams of methamphetamine, drug paraphernalia and an AR-15 rifle. As a previously convicted felon, he cannot possess a firearm. At the time of his arrest by the CCSO, he was listed as a resident of Good Hope.
