CULLMAN, Ala. – Excited customers were lined up around the building Tuesday morning (and one even since Monday night!) at Cullman’s newest restaurant, Chicken Salad Chick. The rain was no deterrent to those vying for free chicken salad for a year, a perk awarded to the first 100 people in line.

Inside, the staff seemed eager to finally open the doors and welcome guests. Many members of the Chicken Salad Chick corporate team pitched in to make sure the Cullman grand opening ran smoothly.

A donation of $2,078.54, collected from those who attended the restaurant’s soft opening prior to Tuesday morning’s grand opening, was made to Cullman Caring for Kids.

Company co-founder Stacy Brown was in attendance to celebrate the opening of the franchise’s 147th location. Brown and her late husband Kevin began by selling her chicken salad door to door in Auburn. Now, the company has locations throughout the Southeast featuring 12 unique types of chicken salad including Fancy Nancy, Fruity Fran, Dixie Chick and Classic Carol. They also have soups, salads and sandwiches.

The first person in line, and a candidate for Husband of the Year in The Tribune’s book, Johnny Lawrence, arrived at 8:29 Monday night to make sure he was among the first 100. When Lawrence finally placed his order, he got it to go- potato soup and a sandwich.

“This is what my wife wanted,” he smiled. “I didn’t get anything. I just want a hot shower.”

Chicken Salad Chick is open Monday-Saturday from 10 a.m.-8 p.m. The restaurant is located at 1817 Cherokee Ave. SW in Cullman.
