FAIRVIEW, Ala. – Both the Lady Raiders and Lady Aggies were on the court at Fairview High School Monday night for the opening round of the class 4A, Area 12 Tournament and split their respective matchups with Oneonta and Ashville. The Lady Redskins edged Good Hope 47-41 in overtime while Fairview pounded the Lady Bulldogs 71-23 to earn a spot in Thursday night’s area tournament title game.

Oneonta 47 – Good Hope 41 (OT) (varsity girls)

Both teams got off to a slow start offensively, but Ivey Maddox’s first three-pointer of the night gave Good Hope a 9-8 lead with 30 seconds to play in the first quarter and the Lady Raiders maintained a 1-point lead at the start of the second.

Another three from Maddox kept Good Hope in front 12-11 early in the second period and the Lady Raiders held a 13-11 advantage midway through the quarter. A Bailey Tetro basket gave Good Hope a 1-point lead late in the opening half and she followed that with two more buckets to make it 19-15 with less than a minute to play in the second. Abbi Neighbors scored in the final seconds of the half to stretch the lead to 21-15 and the Lady Raiders went into the locker room with a 6-point lead.

Good Hope maintained a 21-17 lead early in the third quarter and both teams struggled to get on the scoreboard but a Maddox trey from the top of the key made it 24-20 with just over a minute remaining in the period. A Maddox steal and layup extended the lead to six, but Oneonta was able to cut it to 26-23 by the start of the fourth quarter.

Savanna Derrick buried a three to make it a 29-25 game at the start of the final period, but the Lady Redskins were able to trim the lead to one by the five-minute mark. Back to back buckets by Bailey Tetro put the Lady Raiders in front 34-32 midway though the fourth and she later dropped in a floater to make it 36-34 with three minutes to play in regulation. Maddox drilled another three to give Good Hope a 39-36 lead with just over a minute remaining, but Oneonta answered with a triple on the other end to tie the game. The Lady Raiders were able to hold the ball for the final shot but Maddox’s three fell short, sending the game to overtime.

The Lady Redskins managed to pull ahead by three early in the overtime period but a bucket from Cayleigh Garmon cut the lead to 43-41 with just over a minute to play. Unfortunately, it was the only offense Good Hope was able to muster after regulation and Oneonta was able to pull away and win it 47-41.

Bailey Tetro led the Lady Raiders with 17 points in the loss, followed closely by Maddox with 16. Garmon and Derrick each posted three and Neighbors finished with two. The season comes to an end in the area tournament for Good Hope at 17-11 but with a lot of youth returning to the court next season, the future looks bright for the Lady Raiders.

Fairview 71 – Ashville 23 (varsity girls)

The Lady Aggies smothered Ashville on the defensive end in Monday’s nightcap and put up plenty on the offensive end of the floor to comfortably put away the Lady Bulldogs. A bucket from Daisy Manasco, a three from Molly McKelvy and an inside basket by Isabella McGukin made it a 7-0 game right out of the gate. McGukin and Katie Ball each scored to add to the lead midway through the opening quarter and after a basket by Morgan Lindsey, Fairview led the way 13-5 at the end of the first.

Maddie Yeager scored inside to stretch the lead to 18-7 early in the second and Payton Golden turned a steal into two more easy points to make it 20-7. Back to back triples from McKelvy gave the Lady Aggies a 26-7 lead midway through the quarter and Manasco and Ball each scored again to stretch it to 32-7. Lindsey finished an and-one play at the line in the final seconds of the second quarter to put Fairview on top 35-9 at the half.

Ball turned another steal into a layup to make it a 37-13 game early in the third quarter and McKelvy dropped in five straight points to extend the lead to 42-17 midway through the period. McGukin and Golden both added buckets to make it 50-18 late in the third and after Manasco buried a three at the buzzer, the Lady Aggies went into the final frame leading Ashville 55-20.

McGukin laid one in to add to the lead at the start of the fourth and after Yeager and Ball each scored to make it 63-20 with five minutes to play, Fairview cruised the rest of the way to win it 71-23 and advance to the area 12 tournament finals Thursday night.

McKelvy posted a team-high 16 points in the win, followed by Manasco with 11. McGukin finished with 10 for the Lady Aggies and Golden and Ball each added eight. Fairview will advance to play Oneonta in the area 12 tournament title game at Fairview High School Thursday night at 6.
