BAILEYTON, Ala. – The Baileyton Town Council at its meeting Monday night hoped to clarify the primary reasons for the new security cameras that have been placed at the park and other Town properties. Other media outlets reported toilet paper theft as the main reason for the cameras, but Mayor Johnny Dyar said that is not the case at all.

“The reason why we put our cameras in was for the playground equipment, for the people and kids in the woods playing, also our concession stand has been robbed and we got cameras there. Also, for our medical center and also for the people abusing the park. Just in general, stuff like that,” he said. “The toilet paper was our least problem.”

The Town wants to remind everyone that the lights at the ballfield are not to be turned on by the public. Recently, the lights were turned on and the lock to the power switch was cut in order to do so. It is against the law to vandalize the lock box. Violators can be arrested.

The council also asked that kids and others not play on the ballfields when it is raining or water is standing on the field.

The council approved a change to the Town’s business license fees. Dyar suggested that the cost for local businesses should be lowered from $100 to $25. For out of town vendors, the price would remain at $100. The Towns of Holly Pond and Fairview have similar pricing structures.

The council also approved an increase for the mayor’s salary beginning with the next administration. The salary will be increased from $8,700 to $10,200. It is the responsibility for the current administration to set the salaries for the next council and mayor.

Baileyton spring ball signups will be extended another week this year. Town Clerk Pat Gilbert is out on medical leave. To make sure everyone has a chance to get registered, the council agreed that an extension is warranted.

The Baileyton Town Council meets the first Monday of each month at 7 p.m. at Baileyton Town Hall.
