PREP BASKETBALL: West Point sweeps Broncos, Lady Broncos on the road

HOLLY POND, Ala. – Friday was senior night at Holly Pond High School and there were several cheerleaders and Bronco basketball players to recognize in front of their home crowd but on the court, the night belonged to West Point. The Lady Warriors blew past Holly Pond 73-35 while the Warriors held off a late run from the Broncos win 67-63. The Broncos will travel to New Hope next week for their area tournament while the Lady Broncos stay home to host theirs. The Lady Warriors will return home to host their area tournament next and the Warriors will head to Hamilton.

West Point 73 – Holly Pond 35 (varsity girls)

A layup from Micah Oldacre gave the Lady Warriors an early 6-2 advantage and a bucket by Lexi Shadix made it 12-5 midway through the period. Elizabeth Miller scored to trim the lead to 14-7 with just over two minutes to play in the opening quarter. Holly Pond seized some momentum at the end of the first and a three-pointer from Sarah Finley cut the lead to 14-12 going into the second quarter.

Shadix and Miriam Oldacre both scored to stretch the lead to 20-14 early in the second and the run continued for the Lady Warriors. Molly Pendley scored inside to make it a 29-19 game midway through the quarter and Mendoza and Pendley each buried threes to extend the lead to 35-19. Micah Oldacre buried back to back threes to make it a 41-21 game and after Sheridan Bowers drilled a three at the buzzer, West Point went into the halftime break with a 46-24 lead.

Kennedy Twilley laid one in to make it 52-26 early in the third but Micah Oldacre responded with another trey on the other end to put the Lady Warriors up 57-26 with five minutes to play in the quarter. A steal and layup by Brooke Brownfield extended the lead to 61-26 midway through the period and Shadix converted an and-one play to make it 64-26. West Point led the way 66-28 at the end of the third quarter and with the clock running in the fourth, pulled away to win it 73-35.

Micah Oldacre led the Lady Warriors with 17 points in the win. Shadix added 13, Pendley posted 11, Miram Oldacre scored eight, Bowers put up seven and Braelee Quinn and Ryleigh Jones each finished with five. Finley led Holly Pond with 10 points in the loss, followed by Miller with six and Kaylee Stallings and Tate Duke with five.

West Point 67 – Holly Pond 63 (varsity boys)

Jordan Allbright buried a three from the right corner to give Holly Pond a 3-0 lead right out of the gate but back to back buckets by Tyler Thompson pushed the Warriors ahead 4-3. Will Cochran scored inside to stretch the lead to 9-3 midway through the first quarter, but the Broncos clawed their way back before the start of the second. Allbright finished an and-one play to cut the lead to six and Parker Sellers drilled a three in the final 30 seconds of the period to make it a 14-12 game going into the second quarter.

A Jayden Perkins basket tied the game at 15 early in the second but West Point was able to put together a 7-0 run and move back in front 22-15 midway through the period. Buckets from Allbright and Kyler Chaney trimmed the lead to 22-19 late in the second quarter and after another Warriors run gave them a 28-20 lead late in the half, Back to back baskets by Chaney and a pair of free throws from Allbright brought Holly Pond within one at the halftime break.

Chaney scored again to keep the Broncos within one early in the third but an and-one play by Cochran and a layup from Sam Wheeler gave West Point a 39-32 lead with five minutes to play in the period. Two more buckets from Thompson made it 47-36 late in the third quarter but after another Chaney basket and a three-pointer from Levi Boatright, Holly Pond trailed by just five going into the final frame.

Shannon Kitchens knocked down a three to cut the lead to two at the start of the fourth quarter and Casey Brown followed him with back to back triples to put the Broncos on top 52-48 early in the period. The Warriors were able to build a 4-point lead midway through the fourth, but a Chaney layup trimmed it to two. Allbright knocked down a technical free throw to tie the game at 61 with less than two minutes remaining on the clock but back to back steals and layups by Cochran gave West Point a 65-61 lead. Tyler White drilled a pair of free throws to make it a 6-point game with 30 seconds to play and the Warriors held on to win it on the road 67-63.

Thompson led West Point with 20 points in the win, followed by Cochran with 18 and Kobe Bowers and White with 10. Chaney led all scores with 31 points in the win. Allbright posted 13 and Brown finished with six.
