CULLMAN, Ala. – The United Way of Cullman County (UWCC) on Wednesday afternoon received a hefty donation of $5,500 from Cullman’s Wal-Mart Distribution Center.
“We’re so excited to acknowledge Wal-Mart Distribution Center,” said UWCC Executive Director Becky Goff. “They’ve been a longtime partner with United Way here in Cullman County since the beginning. For more than 30 years they’ve been giving back; our history goes way back. Every year they participate in our ‘Day of Caring,’ and when they do that, they document each employee who volunteers on their time off to volunteer and if they have at least 50 volunteers and more than 250 hours, they can apply for this grant for us.”
Goff said the donation was made possible by a grant from the Volunteerism Always Pays program.
“The grant came from the ‘Volunteerism Always Pays’ (VAP) program that is sponsored by the Wal-Mart Foundation. They (Wal-Mart) submitted all the paperwork and all those volunteer hours, so it takes a lot of time on their part to do that! It’s not part of their job, they do it to give back to the community!” Goff smiled. “This year, we were able to get $5,500 through that foundation grant because of all the volunteers that did it.”
Goff shared a little about last year’s Day of Caring and Wal-Mart Distribution’s involvement.
“It was our ‘Day of Caring,’ which was Sept. 11, 2019,” she said. “They had about 55 volunteers show up that day or more, and over a three day period they worked on Memory Gardens and just transformed the gardens into a beautiful place. It had been neglected. It means a lot to them to give back, not only on that day volunteering for the community, but to also give back to United Way!”
