FAIRVIEW, Ala. — After falling to West Point and Hanceville, respectively, in the Cullman County Tournament, Fairview looked to bounce back on Tuesday night as they hosted Brewer for a pair of senior night matchups. The boys game was a special occasion for the home crowd. The manager of the Aggies basketball team and fan favorite Joseph Kanaday hit the floor against Brewer and scored one of the game’s first baskets to help lead Fairview past the Patriots 71-60 while the Lady Aggies handled the Lady Patriots 46-37. Fairview will host Susan Moore on Thursday night in their regular season finale.
Fairview 46 – Brewer 37 (varsity girls)
Payton Golden had a big first quarter for Fairview as she scored 10 points and the Lady Aggies held Brewer to just five points in the period to take a 13-5 lead into the second. It was a very defensive second quarter as a combined 16 points were scored, but Fairview held a 20-14 lead at the half.
The defensive intensity continued into the third period as a combined five field goals were scored by both teams and Fairview wound up holding a 30-24 lead after three. Fairview won the battle at the free-throw line in the final period, as Golden went 6-for-6, Katie Ball went 4-for-6 and Jaycee Aleman and Daisy Manasco each added one from the charity stripe, allowing the Lady Aggies to pull away late and take the game 46-37.
Golden led the way for Fairview (16-9) with 19 points. Ball added 10, Manasco and Molly McKelvy each ended up with six, Morgan Lindsey and Isabella McGukin each finished with two and Aleman chipped in with a point.
Fairview 70 – Brewer 61 (varsity boys)
The first quarter saw five different Fairview players land in the scoring column, one of which was manager Joseph Kanaday, but the Aggies trailed Brewer 16-15 after one.
A basket by Austin Turner early in the second period gave Fairview a 17-16 lead, but the Patriots retook the lead and went on a run of their own to take a 24-19 lead. A Peyton Bailey trey made it 24-22, but a three straight three-pointers from Brewer stretched the lead to 33-22. Another Turner basket cut the deficit to nine at the half.
The Aggies went on a run to start out the third quarter and a Mason Black layup cut it to three at 33-30. Both teams traded baskets for several possessions before a Dow Nichols and-one made it a 43-41 game. Layups by Austin Jackson and Turner gave the Aggies a 45-43 lead and the duo each hit a shot to end the quarter and give Fairview a 49-46 lead going into the final period.
The Aggies stretched their lead to 55-46 on a Nichols layup, but a 7-2 Brewer run cut the Fairview lead to four with 3:36 remaining in the game. Turner and Jackson helped stretch the lead to 63-56, but five straight points from the Patriots made it a 2-point game late in the fourth. The Aggies were able to pull away with a 7-0 run at the end of the fourth quarter to win a huge game at home 70-61.
Turner had a huge game for Fairview, finishing with a game-high 31 points, 20 of which came in the second half. Nichols added 14 points and Sawyer Daniel and Jackson each ended up with six.
