CULLMAN, Ala. – The curtains opened on the Missoula Children’s Theatre (MCT) production of “Sleeping Beauty” Saturday at the Cullman Civic Center, following a work of packed with auditions and rehearsals. In all, 65 local children participated. The production was directed by MCT Tour Team Members Cassandra Feldt and Lindsay Abrams.
“Missoula Children’s Theatre goes through all 50 states, 17 different countries and different provinces all through Canada,” said Abrams. “What happens throughout the whole entire week is that tour teams like myself and Cassy go to different towns- the first part on Monday we put on an audition then second part of Monday and then Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and with a little bit time on Friday we put on rehearsals for a full scale performance for Saturday.”
Abrams praised the local actors.
“This cast has done such a phenomenal job,” she smiled. “If they did this in one week, imagine what they would do for their futures!”
While keeping somewhat to the original storyline of “Sleeping Beauty,” the MCT production features a twist when Sleeping Beauty, who is 516 at the end of the play, is awoken. She had been cursed by her father the king’s evil sister Scarella to sleep for eternity if she should prick her finger on a spindle before she reached her 16th birthday. The twist? It’s the 1960s and none other than the King of Rock and Roll, Elvis Presley, awakens her!
Why did Scarella put the curse on Sleeping Beauty? She thought she wasn’t invited to the celebration of Beauty’s birth, but she was fooled by trolls hired to deliver invitations to everyone in the land; the trolls mischievously “misplaced” the invitation to Scarella, who in turn cursed Beauty. Originally cursed to sleep for eternity, Beauty received a gift from a fairy- that she would sleep for at least 500 years unless awoken by True Love’s Kiss, which is given to her by Elvis.
And what happened to the evil Scarella in the end? According to Elvis, she opened up a burger joint with the trolls.
