HANCEVILLE, Ala. – Hanceville residents will soon see some improvements and upgrades to the city’s dog park thanks to a $5,000 grant announced by Mayor Kenneth Nail at Thursday night’s Hanceville City Council meeting. The dog park is located near the creek at Veterans Park.

Councilwoman Kim Brown explained, “The grant will give us the ability to add some better equipment, some runs and improve the fencing on the back side.”

The specifics on the source of the grant were not available Thursday evening.

The council approved to surplus two large military trucks and two other vehicles from the Hanceville Police Department on GovDeals. The City is surplussing the vehicles is an effort to raise funds for new cameras for the police department. The City approved money in this year’s budget for the purchase of seven new body cameras as well as seven car cameras.

Police Chief Bob Long said, “We need new ones. The other ones are outdated and are starting to tear up. Some of them are unserviceable. The council agreed to fund seven, but I need to purchase 11.”

Nail spoke about the $250,000 grant Hanceville received this month for resurfacing of and drainage work on Commercial Street from U.S. Highway 31 eastward to the bridge at North Fork Mud Creek. The grant was announced Jan. 16 by Gov. Kay Ivey and the Alabama Department of Transportation (ALDOT) as a part of the $7 million awarded to cities and counties for various local road and bridge projects. The funding was made available through the Annual Grant Program, a new program created under the Rebuild Alabama Act.

“I want to thank the governor,” said Nail. “I want to thank Senator (Garlan) Gudger and Representative (Randall) Shedd. Hanceville was the first area in Cullman County to receive the new Rebuild Alabama money-$250,000.”

The City of Hanceville is working with the Town of Colony for a Census Celebration scheduled for June 6. The family event will have fun activities and food for those who come out and make sure they are counted in the 2020 Census.

“Something we need to target heavy are the kids in the dorms and apartments- we’ve gotta make sure they fill it out. Also, the Hispanic community. I’d really like to see us hit 3,500 this census. Every person we have is more money for our city,” Nail said.

The event will have volunteers to help those who may need assistance to make sure they are registered and counted.

This year’s Hanceville Irish Festival is scheduled for March 14 from 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Look for more details soon.

The next Hanceville City Council meeting is Feb. 13 at 6 p.m. at Hanceville City Hall. A public hearing will be held for the rezoning of the Tenax property.
