CULLMAN COUNTY TOURNAMENT: (2) West Point routs (7) Vinemont 71-16 to advance to semifinals

HANCEVILLE, Ala. – West Point and Vinemont squared off Monday night in the first varsity girls matchup of this year’s Cullman County Basketball Tournament and the Lady Warriors put this one away early. West Point built a 19-0 lead before the Lady Eagles got on the scoreboard and after leading 27-2 at the end of the first quarter, West Point cruised to a 71-16 win over Vinemont, earning a spot in Thursday’s semifinal round.

A triple from Miriam Oldacre gave West Point an early 3-0 lead and the points kept coming for the Lady Warriors. They stretched the lead to 8-0 as the quarter progressed and Miriam Oldacre picked up three more points with an and-one play that made it 11-0 midway through the period. Micah Oldacre drilled a mid-range jumper to make it 15-0 with just over three minutes to play in the first and Mackenzie Carter scored beneath the basket to extend the lead to 17-0. Molly Pendley scored after pulling down an offensive board but the Lady Eagles scored their first points of the night on a Kendall Harbison layup to trim the lead to 19-2 late in the opening quarter. A Lexi Shadix bucket gave West Point a 23-2 lead with just over a minute remaining in the period and another Carter score made it 25-2. Shadix turned a steal into two quick points in the final seconds of the first quarter and the Lady Warriors went into the second leading Vinemont 27-2.

Pendley scored another basket off a perfect pass from Brooke Brownfield early in the second quarter to make it a 30-2 game and another Carter basket stretched the lead to 35-2 with just over four minutes to play in the half. Back to back Shadix baskets down low gave West Point a 41-3 lead with just under three minutes remaining in the period and the Lady Warriors went into halftime with a stout, 46-7 advantage.

A deep three from Sadie Stanley on the left wing cut the lead to 48-10 early in the third quarter but Shadix responded with a three of her own to put West Point back in front 51-10. Ryleigh Jones knocked down another three for the Lady Warriors to make it 54-10 and another bucket from Carter stretched the lead to 56-10 midway through the period. Miriam Oldacre scored late in the third to make it a 61-11 game and Pendley drilled another three for West Point in the final seconds of the third to build the lead to 66-11 going into the final frame.

Emily Wells knocked down a three-pointer to make it 69-11 midway through the fourth quarter and with the clock running during the final period, the Lady Warriors went on to advance to the semifinals with a 71-16 win over Vinemont.

Miriam Oldacre led the way for West Point with 19 points in the win. Pendley finished with 15, Shadix added 14 and Carter posted eight. Stanley led the Lady Eagles with six points, followed by Harbison and Bailey Preiss who each finished with three.

The Lady Warriors will face either (3) Fairview or (6) Hanceville in the semifinals Thursday night at 7:30.
