PREP BASKETBALL: Vinemont Eagles, Lady Eagles fall to New Hope at home

VINEMONT, Ala. – After dropping a pair of games at West End on Thursday, Vinemont looked to rebound against New Hope at home in a pair of area showdowns. Unfortunately, they dropped both games to New Hope, with the Lady Eagles falling to the Lady Indians 61-32 and the Eagles dropped their game to the Indians 63-48. Vinemont will travel to Hanceville next Tuesday.

New Hope 61 – Vinemont 32 (varsity girls)

The first quarter was very low scoring, but New Hope held a slim, 9-7 lead after one. It was all Lady Indians in the second period as they outscored Vinemont 23-2 and the Lady Eagles’ only points came on a pair of free throws from Sadie Stanley. Vinemont went into the half trailing 32-9.

The Lady Eagles went on a 6-2 run to start out the third period as they cut the lead to 34-15. But they traded three-pointers with the Lady Indians for a while before finishing the quarter on a 5-0 run to make it a 43-26 game after three. That was as close as they would get the rest of the game and they wound up dropping the area game to New Hope, 61-32.

Stanley led Vinemont (6-14, 1-4) with 19 points. Bailey Preiss and Magdalen Burks each added four, Jessica Ortiz ended up with three and Abby Young chipped in with two.

New Hope 63 – Vinemont 48 (varsity boys)

Vinemont got on the scoreboard first with 6:34 remaining in the opening period on a William Rhodes free throw. New Hope got its first points of the scoreboard at the line 43 seconds later and stretched their lead to 6-1. Colby Miller hit a free throw, then Katch Johnson got the Eagles’ first basket of the game with 1:52 remaining in the quarter on a put-back shot to make it a 6-4 game. A 7-2 Indians run pushed their lead to 13-6 after one.

New Hope stretched its lead to 19-6 to start out the second quarter, but a pair of Johnson free throws, followed by a Jordan Hall shot, made it a 19-10 contest. The Indians held a 23-12 lead before Hall and Collin Teichmiller each hit a shot to cut the deficit to 23-16, but they wound up trailing 28-18 at the half.

After New Hope made it 32-18 to start out the third period, Hall nailed a three to make it 32-21, but the Indians scored 11 points in a row to push their lead to 43-21. Connor Handley hit a three to stop the run, but New Hope held a 47-29 lead after three.

The Indians scored the first eight points of the fourth quarter to push their lead to 55-29. Johnson hit a shot to stop the run and looked to make one of their own to get back in the contest. After trailing 59-36, the Eagles scored four in a row to make it 59-40 and later scored eight in a row to make it 61-48. Despite their late comeback, Vinemont wound up falling 63-48.

Hall finished with 16 points, five rebounds and two steals for Vinemont (8-13, 2-3). Johnson added 13 points and a pair of steals, Curtis Kennedy ended up with seven points and two steals, Teichmiller added five points, Rhodes (five rebounds and a pair of steals) and Handley each ended up with three points and Colby Miller (two steals) chipped in with a point.
