HOLLY POND, Ala. – The Broncos and Lady Broncos were both playing at home Friday night and they were there to host Brindlee Mountain for an important pair of area matchups. The Lady Broncos handled the Lady Lions with a smothering defensive performance in the second half 41-25 and the Broncos pulled away early in the fourth quarter to defeat the Lions 61-44.

Holly Pond 41 – Brindlee Mountain 25 (varsity girls)

Holly Pond led by just a point after the opening quarter but after six different Lady Broncos found the scoring column in the first half, led by Elizabeth Miller with seven, the lead was up to 22-14 by halftime.

A pair of free throws from Kaylee Stallings extended the lead to 25-14 early in the third quarter and back to back three-pointers from her and Sarah Finley made it a 30-17 game midway through the period. There wasn’t much scoring to speak of the rest of the way and the Lady Broncos went into the final frame leading the Lady Lions 30-18.

Another three from Finley stretched the lead to 33-18 early in the fourth and she, along with Kennedy Twilley, added two more baskets midway through the quarter to make it 37-23 with just under four minutes to play. Holly Pond continued to suffocate Brindlee Mountain defensively and held on to collect the area win 41-25. The Lady Lions were held to just 11 points in the second half.

Finley led the Lady Broncos with 12 points in the win, followed by Miller with nine, Stallings with eight and Tate Duke with five.

Holly Pond 61 – Brindlee Mountain 44 (varsity boys)

The Broncos managed to jump out to a 13-6 lead in the first quarter of Friday’s nightcap and extended that lead to 19-7 early in the second. A steal and quick bucket for Jaxon Olinger put Holly Pond in front 21-7 at the five-minute mark of the second quarter and a pair of free throws from Jordan Allbright made it 24-15 with less than three minutes to play in the half. Shannon Kitchens converted an and-one play at the free throw line to give the Broncos a 27-17 lead late in the second and they went into the locker room with a 27-20 lead at the half.

A Kyler Chaney bucket gave Holly Pond a 31-22 lead early in the third and then a steal from Olinger led to a Kitchens basket that made it 31-22 at the five-minute mark of the period. Olinger followed that with yet another steal that Allbright turned into two quick points and the Broncos built a 36-30 lead by the end of the third quarter.

The start of the fourth quarter was when Chaney began to take over. Two quick baskets from he and Levi Boatright put Holly Pond in front 40-33 early in the fourth and then Chaney ran off 10 straight points for the Broncos to put them on top 52-37 with under five minutes to play. Chaney later finished off an and-one play at the free throw line to make it 57-42 with just over a minute to play and Holly Pond cruised to a 61-44 area win over the Lions.

Chaney led the Broncos with 29 points in the win, 15 of which came in the fourth quarter. Boatright scored nine for Holly Pond and Kitchens and Allbright each finished with seven. The Broncos and Lady Broncos will be back home next Thursday to host Fairview.
