HANCEVILLE, Ala. – In mid-November, the Hanceville community welcomed Arise Coffee Co. (called Rise Up in its early stages), a coffee shop with a focus on health, including therapy, and community. Thursday evening, Arise unveiled its newest expansion in that focus: Arise Fitness Co., a gym connected to the restaurant. Arise Fitness will be open during the same hours as the coffee shop and will offer trainer-led classes each day of the week (included in memberships). Currently, the classes being offered are spin classes, strength training and circuit training/functional fitness, though co-owner Leah McCollins said more people buying memberships will mean more money to buy equipment and expand the selection of classes.

On the subject of memberships, McCollins said the rates will not only be reasonably inexpensive, but also be even further reduced for people who bring a friend.

“If you bring a friend, and you sign a 12-month (contract), then the rate is $40 a month. That’s the rate if you buddy up, and it’s $60 for an individual,” she explained. “We really just wanna have a sense of community here. You know, folks that partner up tend to do better. Anything that you do with an accountability partner, you’re gonna be more successful at, and that’s what we’re trying to promote.”

McCollins said she will announce the days and times for each class on Facebook soon; you can visit Arise Fitness on Facebook at www.facebook.com/Arise-Fitness-Co-1454099801562214/ and Arise Coffee at www.facebook.com/pages/category/Coffee-Shop/Arise-Coffee-Co-107892103970685/.

McCollins went on to say, “This is a place for the total person: the nutrition, the fitness and then the mental health and the spiritual aspect that we do in the counseling or life coaching. The counseling is only $25 an hour because we’re really trying to make it available for people who don’t have insurance. All of this isn’t about us trying to compete with other gyms in the county, but we just believe that Hanceville needs this. I personally don’t like waking up early and driving all the way into the city just to do a fitness class, so we’re really trying to market to people in Hanceville who can’t or don’t want to do that either. “

She added that she feels optimistic about the gym just based on the feedback the coffee shop has gotten from the community.

“I feel like we’ve had a lot of community support and involvement. You know, another thing that we do is we’ll have worship nights – Jesse Priest is actually coming next Friday night and we’ll be serving gumbo again – and on the 17th we’ll be partnering with a nonprofit to do another worship night. We’ve got book clubs and all these different clubs from Wallace that come in and meet during the evenings. I’ve even had someone hold a baby shower here! We just have a lot of space and there’s so many different ways to use it.”

Arise is open every day of the week, 6 a.m.-8 p.m., and is located at 113 Commercial St. in Hanceville.
