HANCEVILLE, Ala. — The final Friday game of the Wallace State Pre-Christmas Bash featured the Cullman Bearcats and the Oneonta Redskins. After the Bearcats jumped out to a huge lead early, Oneonta got back in the game behind some red-hot shooting and the Redskins wound up taking the game 60-54.
Cullman got off to a quick start in the game. Jayden Sullins scored the first three points of the quarter to give the Bearcats a 3-0 lead. Oneonta scored their first basket with 5:02 remaining in the first period, but Cullman dominated the rest of the quarter, allowing just one basket the rest of the way and finished the first on a 14-2 run to take a 17-4 lead into the second period.
A Sullins three stretched the Bearcat lead to 20-6, but the Redskins got red-hot from deep later in the quarter and made it a 25-17 game. A Jaden Orr shot gave Cullman a double-digit lead at 27-17, but Oneonta finished the quarter on an 8-0 run to cut the lead to 27-25 game at the half.
A pair of Sullins free throws made the score 31-28 early in the third, but the Redskins went on a 5-0 run to take a 33-31 lead. Oneonta answered multiple Cullman baskets with one of their own. A Tucker Gambrill free throw cut the deficit to 41-39, but back-to-back layups by the Redskins gave them a 45-39 lead going into the final quarter.
The Bearcats started the final period strong as Sullins hit a layup, Kaleb Heatherly hit a pair from the line and Noah Bussman hit a trey to give them a 46-45 lead with 6:42 remaining in the contest. A 7-2 Redskin run gave them the lead right back at 52-48, but Sullins hit four straight from the line to tie the game up at 52 with 3:19 remaining in the game. Oneonta took over after that and finished the game on an 8-2 run and wound up handing the Bearcats a 60-54 loss at Tom Drake Coliseum.
Sullins led Cullman (8-5) with 20 points, seven rebounds, and a steal. Bussman added 10 points, four rebounds, a steal and a block. Tucker Gambrill ended up with eight points, four rebounds and a steal. Jaden Orr added six points, Heatherly ended up with four and Robert Goolsby, Nicholas Glass and Tucker Gable each chipped in with two. They will take on Buckhorn on Saturday at 6 p.m. in the Wallace State Pre-Christmas Bash.
