HANCEVILLE, Ala. – Hundreds of parents packed into the Hanceville High School gymnasium Tuesday morning to watch the elementary classes perform their Christmas show. Led by music teacher Mary Jo Lakin, each grade took turns performing songs and routines chosen by their teachers. Kindergarteners, decked out in handmade elf ear headbands, started the program with “I Want to be an Elf” and a holiday-themed song about counting. First graders followed them with the classic songs “Away in a Manger” and “Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer.”
Second graders sang “Frosty the Snowman” and performed a dance (choreographed by PE teacher Tammy Griffith) to “Jingle Bells,” followed by third graders singing “Jingle Bell Rock.” The fourth graders performed “Silent Night” and the Latin song “We Sing Gloria,” then the fifth graders sang “Up on the Housetop.” The kindergarteners then took the stage again to perform the “Turkey Dance” – with dance moves like the “Chicken Dance,” but with turkey-themed lyrics. To finish the program, all grades joined together to sing “Joy to the World.”
Lakin said she was very pleased with how the program turned out, especially since she was not as involved with the program as she usually is.
“Since I was out this year basically from Halloween up to last week, the teachers picked the songs and helped the kids work on them. Tammy Griffith, the PE teacher, worked on the ‘Jingle Bells’ thing and also helped them practice the songs during PE, and then we all got together once last week to put everything together,” she smiled. “I know a lot of the kids came up to me and said they’d been practicing this and that in class and doing it during PE helped a lot. Aside from a speaker malfunction at the start, this year’s program has gone really well.”
Lakin said the elementary school will be performing “The Wizard of Oz” in the spring, so parents will want to keep an eye out for announcements regarding that performance.
