FAIRVIEW, Ala. – After the success of the program’s debut last year, Fairview High School Theatre and the beginner, middle school and high school bands and percussion ensemble all came together to put on the school’s second annual Scenes & Songs Christmas Show Sunday.

The night started with Mark Dobbs, head of FHS Theatre, introducing the first feature of the night: a performance of “Junie B. Jones: Jingle Bells, Batman Smells.” The play follows first grader Junie B. Jones and her journal entries as she prepares for her class’s holiday sing-along, reminisces about her disastrous Columbus Day class production, bickers with her rival May and makes a tough choice between goodwill and revenge during her class’s Secret Santa party.

After the play, band director Nathan Kilgo took the stage to introduce the musical performances. First was the elementary school’s Beginner Band, which played a few classic Christmas tunes like “Jingle Bells,” “Jolly Old St. Nick” and “Up on the Housetop,” as well as a more stylized song called “Frosty Bell Rock.” The middle school band performed next, playing more classics like “White Christmas” and “Feliz Navidad” but also new songs like “A Cartoon Christmas” (arranged by Michael Story) and “Candy Cane Clarinets” (arranged by Zane Van Auken), which featured the FMS Band clarinet section.

After the middle school, the FHS percussion ensemble took the stage for an all-percussion rendition of “Mele Kalikimaka,” before the full high school band came out for its show. During the transition between the ensemble and the full band, Kilgo took the time to raffle off two $15 gift cards to the Brandin Iron. The high school band started off with “Sleigh Ride” and “The First Noel,” then moved to a lively medley titled “Cowboy Christmas” (arranged by Jeff Simmons) before finishing with its final song of the night: “Celtic Carol” (arranged by Robert W. Smith).
