HOLLY POND, Ala. – After splitting a pair of varsity matchups at Vinemont earlier this week, Holly Pond returned home Friday night to host New Hope for a big area showdown. Unfortunately for the home crowd, the Broncos and Lady Broncos both came up short against the Indians 62-55 and 44-34, respectively.

New Hope 44 – Holly Pond 34 (varsity girls)

Holly Pond first got on the scoreboard with a pair of free throws by Sarah Finley with 7:49 remaining in the opening period. A pair of shots from the charity stripe by Kaylee Stallings, plus consecutive layups by Elizabeth Miller, allowed the Lady Broncos to jump out to a quick 8-2 lead. After New Hope tied the game at eight on back-to-back treys, it was all Holly Pond to end the quarter as a 10-0 run gave the Lady Broncos an 18-8 lead after one.

The Lady Indians had a quick answer to start out the second period as they went on a 12-0 run to take a 20-18 lead but Miller stopped the run with a rebound and put-back for Holly Pond’s first basket of the quarter with 3:18 remaining to tie the game at 20. A quarter-ending 6-3 run by the Lady Indians gave them a 26-23 advantage at the break.

The second half saw New Hope stretch its lead out a little bit with a 9-3 run to increase the Lady Bronco deficit to seven at 35-28, but Kennedy Twilley made it 35-30 at the end of the third with a layup. Holly Pond saw its deficit stretch to double digits to start out the final period. They couldn’t quite climb out of that hole the rest of the way and wound up falling, 44-34, snapping their three-game winning streak.

Miller led the way for Holly Pond (6-7, 2-1) with 10 points and 11 rebounds. Finley added eight points and four rebounds. Tate Duke ended up with seven points and a steal, Stallings added six points and four steals, while Twilley finished with three points and three steals.

New Hope 62 – Holly Pond 55 (varsity boys)

New Hope jumped out to a quick 8-0 lead to start the game, but Holly Pond quickly struck back with Kyler Chaney and Levi Boatright as they scored 13 of the game’s next 16 points to give the Broncos a 13-11 lead. The Indians got the lead right back on a three-pointer, but Jordan Allbright hit a short jumper to give Holly Pond the lead right back at 15-14 after one.

For the second straight quarter, New Hope went on a huge run as they scored 11 in a row to get the lead right back at 25-15. Chaney hit a pair from the line with 5:03 remaining for Holly Pond’s first points of the period, then Parker Sellers hit a layup to make it 25-19, but the Indians stretched their lead right back to double digits as they went into the half leading 31-21.

The Broncos couldn’t have asked for a better start to the second half as Boatright got them started early with two straight jumpers. Jayden Perkins added a bucket down low to make it 33-27 and after a three-point play by New Hope, it was Holly Pond’s turn for a huge run as four different players scored during the 12-0 run to take a 39-36 lead. But the Indians countered with a run of their own, finishing the quarter on a 13-1 run to take a 49-40 lead into the final quarter.

Every time Holly Pond scored, New Hope countered with one of their own and the Broncos couldn’t close the deficit any closer than seven the rest of the way as they fell seven points short, 62-55.

Chaney finished with 21 points, 15 rebounds, three blocks and a pair of steals for Holly Pond (3-9, 1-2). Perkins added 12 points and five rebounds, Boatright ended up with 11 points and a block. Allbright finished with seven points and seven rebounds and Sellers and Casey Brown each chipped in with two points.

Holly Pond will travel to Cold Springs on Monday.
