CULLMAN, Ala. – West Elementary spread the message of kindness and Christmas cheer with its performance of “A Christmas Carol” Tuesday evening. West’s production featured a unique mix of the classic story with more modern Christmas carols everyone could recognize and sing along with.
“Every year we do a play and this year we chose to do ‘A Christmas Carol,’” said West Elementary Drama Sponsor Lauren Hathcock. “We tried to do something that has a good message behind it; we tried to do something with kindness, because we’re all about that at West, that’s kind of our ‘West Way.’ We haven’t performed this before, so we chose that this year.”
Hathcock shared why the group chose the production with the more modern Christmas songs, saying, “We are elementary, so it’s harder for them do the Old English and that type of stuff. I found this and I went, ‘That’s going to connect to more people; they’re going to be able to relate to it more and if they can relate to it, they’re going to perform it better.’”
The kids prepared for eight long weeks for Tuesday night’s show.
“This year we were actually on a shorter timeline so we didn’t have as much time,” said Hathcock.
In all, 126 West Elementary students were involved in the production.
“I’m appreciative of the students for the hard work that they’ve put in,” Hathcock said. “I’m appreciative to all the parents for what they’ve put in: their time, they donate materials, most importantly their time, and then to the West administration, all the faculty and staff, that deal with me during this time. I’m really appreciative of them.”
