BERLIN, Ala. – The Berlin Town Council at a special-called meeting Monday night named a new town clerk. At its regular meeting last week, the council announced it was looking for candidates and no resumes had been submitted. Because the position needed to be filled as soon as possible, the council called a special meeting Monday night to discuss three new applicants for the job.Â
Clerk Connie Duke (who is stepping down) listed the expected duties that come with the job: reconciling the Town’s six bank accounts each week; taking minutes during each council meeting; keeping careful records and keeping track of the boxes of paper records until they can be filed in a permanent town hall; interacting with the community, especially once the town hall is built; keeping up with the Town’s bills and invoices and making sure they’re paid on time; answering the phone, returning emails and voicemails; writing checks for Town employees on payroll; handling the workload associated with the upcoming census and elections; and attending an election training session next week
Mayor Patrick Bates and the council interviewed the candidates (Erin Fowler, Baylee Chrietzberg and Keirstyn Maxwell) individually and asked about the qualifications and experience listed on their resumes.
After interviewing each of the candidates, the council spent a few minutes in executive session to hear information relating to the good name and character of one or more of the applicants. When they returned, the council members agreed to make a decision at the same meeting rather than tabling it for later, and voted 4-1 (Bates abstained) to hire Maxwell. The council also voted to keep Duke on regular payroll on an as-needed basis until the December meeting so she could stay on and help make the transition smoother.
