CULLMAN, Ala. – Cullman Florist Manager Carla Fussell was recently recognized in Teleflora’s national publication, The Retail Florist.
Fussell shared, “They called, and they were looking to do an article on I think entrepreneurship, because I’m part of the Teleflora Team, the education team, and they had my name and so they called here and asked if they could interview me!”
Fussell said she talked up Cullman in the magazine.
“We talked about the history of Cullman, about how the florist moved from place to place and why and then the (2011) tornado and all that,” she said. “I was asked about the owners and what kinds of things we like to do here, and I gave them all that and they wrote it up. I mentioned a lot of Cullman stuff in there, like 2nd Fridays. I was asked what we do for our community and we talked about our business-to-business service that we offer and how we always participate in the Chamber events and everything like lights and window displays and such. I tried to make sure Cullman got a shout-out in there!”
Fussell was pretty excited to be featured in the national publication.
“Oh, it’s pretty neat! I think all the florists in the country get that magazine, it’s (The) Retail Florist, and it’s not a big magazine, but it is an industry magazine, so it’ll go across the nation and that’s pretty cool!”
Of the article, she said, “Part of it is my history and that I was a teacher to begin with, so I mean, I never planned to do this! But it ended up being an opportunity that fell into my lap and I really enjoyed it and so, maybe your first career is not the best thing you do, maybe sometimes your second career is. So that’s kind of cool for younger people to think that even if what you’re doing right now isn’t what you want to do or isn’t working out, there could be something better around the corner, you never know!
“Another part of the article would be the history of the community, because I was telling them how this building used to be a bar and a bowling alley; you can look down at the floor and see just a little bit of a slant. Some people used to sit in here and set up pins. They had pin-boys and they would set up the pins for people to bowl. It’s just, you wonder and think of all the things that went on in this building before we were ever here and that’s pretty cool. It was built in 1905 and a lot of our older customers that come in, they’ll tell me ‘Oh, I used to eat lunch here with my dad,’ or ‘We used to go to the movie theater right over there,’ and it’s like ‘Really? There was a movie theater over there?’ It’s neat! I didn’t grow up in Cullman and was raised in a military family, my parents are from here, so I didn’t know about that. I wanted to bring a little bit of the aspect of the history and the community in general, just Cullman in general.”
Smiled Fussell, “I was just privileged to be featured in it, and I hope I represented well. We’ve been here 53 years now, and we really enjoy working with all the people in the community.”
