GARDEN CITY, Ala. – The municipal office of the Town of Garden City will be closed at noon Wednesday, Nov. 13, 2019 in honor of former Mayor Harden Davis, who passed away Sunday, Nov. 9, 2019 at the age of 95. The office will reopen Thursday. Davis was mayor of Garden City for 10 years, from 2002-2012.
Current Garden City Mayor Tim Eskew shared, “He was the one that started the Garden City River Park and he was a WWII veteran. He was just a good gentleman, good man, a good leader.”
Eskew said Harden did a lot for Garden City.
“He kept us in a good place,” he said. “He got the first grant for our water system for expanding the system; it was about a $350,000 grant at one point. The main thing was he did his job.”
The Town wanted to honor Davis by closing the municipal office.
“One of his last wishes was that his pallbearers be people from the town,” said Eskew. “Most of our workers are pallbearers for tomorrow.”
Eskew said of his friend, “I’d known Harden all my life. He moved back quite a few years back now, and he was just a good man for the community. Church, city, whatever, Harden was there. If you needed anything, he was one who was there to help. We need more people like him today.”
Davis’ funeral service will take place today at Moss Service Funeral Home beginning at 1 p.m., with Bro. Scott Arnold officiating. His family will receive friends prior to the service from 11 a.m. until service time. Burial will follow in Garden City Cemetery.
