CULLMAN, Ala. – Cullman Middle School’s band received a special donation Wednesday morning and it was the latest of several donations made over the years by a pair of local supporters. Since 2014, Ray and Benton Buchmann have been supporters of the Cullman Middle School band and donated new instruments. CMS Band Director Linda Bean said in a statement regarding the Buchmanns and the donation,

“Even after some students try out for the band and show musical talent, the middle school doesn’t have instruments since it is up to the parents to buy or lease them for the students. With the cooperation of Michael Wagner or MRW Artisan Instruments of Panama City Beach, Florida, who is a factory distributer of Selmer-Basson band instruments, the Buchmanns have helped a number of students’ dream come true.”

The Buchmanns have supported the band for longer than assistant director Doug Teuscher has been helping and he was happy to get the chance to meet them Wednesday morning and thank them personally for their contributions.

“Every school year they try to provide something, and it helps a lot. Last year I think was a clarinet and they’ve provided a saxophone in the past; a clarinet and I think a trombone as well,” Teuscher said. “I’ve only been here a few years so that’s just from my memory. I actually haven’t been able to meet them until now because they usually do it in the summer.”

This year, the CMS band received a factory new Basson trumpet and Assistant Band Director Doug Teuscher is excited to be able to add some more equipment to the band’s collection.

“It really helps us to build a base of instruments in our band room that the school can own, and it helps us provide for students that have hardships and can’t afford something immediately,” Teuscher said. “We can get them learning and even if their instrument is damaged for whatever reason, we can let them use one of these horns and they won’t miss any rehearsal. So, to have stuff like this available really helps a lot.”
