CULLMAN, Ala. – Attention, job seekers! With unemployment rates at record lows, employers are working hard to get employees, and Cullman area industries are no exception. This Saturday, Sept. 28, 2019, eight or more of the county’s industries will be at the Cullman Civic Center from 8 a.m. until noon, taking applications, and in some cases, conducting interviews on the spot.

Committed participants include:

  • Birmingham Fastener
  • Homtex
  • Louisiana Pacific
  • NAFCO
  • REHAU
  • Topre America
  • Wal-Mart Distribution
  • Yutaka Technologies

According to Cullman Economic Development Agency (CEDA) Project Coordinator Susan Eller, other industries have expressed an interest, so the number of recruiters may rise.

Said Eller, “We have companies that have available jobs now that’ll be taking applications. Some may be doing onsite interviews; if it’s someone that they really know fits what they’re looking for, there may be some onsite interviews. There’s no place right now to apply. All applications will be done onsite. Some will be paper applications and some will be online only, but we will have computers set up there for people who are only taking online applications.”

Eller said 100 or more jobs could be available currently, and companies may also take applications to fill positions as they come open in the future.

The event has been advertised to residents of Cullman, Jefferson, Walker, Winston, Lawrence, Morgan and Blount Counties.

According to Eller, “Those are all people that may not have an industry market like we have, so they may have available people. Those are all that can drive to and from Cullman probably within about 30 minutes, so with our easy accessibility of our industrial parks to the interstate, it makes it really easy for people to get in and out of Cullman.”

Not what most people think of industry

Eller said Cullman’s industries generally defy traditional concepts of the factory floor, saying, “People may have a picture of a factory in their mind as somewhere that’s dark and dirty and hot places to work, but most of our industries in Cullman, most of them are air-conditioned-not all, most of them are clean, well-lit. It’s a great opportunity for people to get their foot in the doors.

“And with the job market today, you can move up as fast as you want to in a lot of the facilities. I talked to a young man the other day that started out as production, and I think he’s been there less than three years, maybe, and he’s already in management. That’s not going to happen to everybody, but there are opportunities for people to move up, if you’re doing a good job and performing.”

Come ready for business

Eller advised job seekers to “come ready to interview: dressed appropriately, bring your resumé. You can bring your resumé with you if you want to; that’s just to give you a step ahead.”
