RUSSELLVILLE, Ala. – The West Point Warriors are coming off a 42-14 victory in their home opener against Lawrence County last week but couldn’t find their rhythm offensively when they traveled to Russellville Friday night. The Warriors were held to just six points in a 51-6 loss to the Golden Tigers and went home with their second loss in the region.
A touchdown run from the quarterback gave Russellville a 7-0 lead by the start of the second quarter and a bad snap on a punt play set the Golden Tigers up for an easy touchdown to go up 14-0 early in the quarter. A second scoring run for the quarterback made it a 21-0 game midway through the second quarter and two more late touchdown runs gave Russellville a commanding 35-0 advantage at the break.
West Point found the end zone midway through the third quarter when quarterback Will Cochran found Logan Selby through the air for a 30-yard touchdown that made it 35-6 but that was all the offense the Warriors could muster and the Golden Tigers pulled away to win it 51-6, moving West Point to 2-3 on the season.
The Warriors are now 1-2 in region play and will have next week off before hosting Jasper for a huge showdown Oct. 4.
