CULLMAN, Ala. – The North Alabama Agriplex’s Farm Kids Club cooked up a special treat Saturday morning, preparing a meal for themselves and their families.
“We do a monthly Farm Kids Club, and each month it’s a different topic, like next month (October) it’s ‘Charlotte’s Web’ so we’ll be talking about spiders and pigs and everything to do with the book,” said Agriplex Director Rachel Dawsey. “Today was cooking, so it was a cooking class with kids. We’re very thankful to have volunteers come and help us today who are dietitians and nutritionists. They are professionals with the North Alabama Dietetic Association. We tried to do local foods and things that were in season right now. The kids learned basic cooking techniques and then they actually got to prepare a meal that we shared at the end.”
The kids prepared a variety of dishes.
“We did a vegetable confetti salad, a late-summer salad. We did roasted sweet potatoes, but they weren’t quite done in time, chicken teriyaki kabobs with veggies and a fruit tartlet made with wonton wrappers, with yogurt on the top,” said Dawsey.
“I think it was good,” she said of the morning’s activity. “I think that it’s always a crazy undertaking, but we had I think 25 kids plus siblings plus adults so it makes for a big group. We were able to use the mobile food kitchen, and that worked well because we used the oven in it. We used our outdoor kitchen which has a grill and wood burner stove and a sink out there, while our other groups were inside. It worked well, we were able to spread out, the weather was good, and I think the kids all tried things that were new.”
The Farm Kids Club is a program offered by the North Alabama Agriplex Group year-round, with the only month off being August. It is for kids ages 5 and older with adults and it’s the first Saturday of every month.
Dawsey said, “Anyone can come if they will register ahead of time, we have online registration, you can go to our website at agriplex.org.”
