CULLMAN, Ala. – A woman who was struck by lightning at Smith Lake Park Saturday, July 20 has been identified as Kelly Hodo, of Hayden, according to a GoFundMe page set up on her behalf.

Hodo was one of two people injured in the incident.

According to Cullman Emergency Management Agency (EMA) Director Phyllis Little that day, “It was a pop-up thunderstorm about 4:15 in area of Smith Lake Park. As people moved from the beach to their vehicles, two people were injured by an apparent lightning strike. Both were transported by Cullman Emergency Medical Services (EMS) to Cullman Regional.”

The GoFundMe page says Hodo is a mother of two.

The page reads, in part: “She was severely injured and is still in the hospital. Kelly has recently started a new job and her medical insurance hasn’t gone into effect yet. We are asking for any help you can give. Every dime adds up and we would like to take the worry and stress off of Kelly as she recovers. We are unsure of how long she will be in the hospital and unable to work. PLEASE HELP IF YOU CAN AND CONTINUE TO PRAY FOR HER!”

According to one of the page’s organizers, Kristin Grissom, the other victim, who has not been identified, has been released from the hospital.

“He is doing well. He was released on Saturday and healing fine,” she said.
