CRANE HILL, Ala. – A Crane Hill woman who was found unresponsive in Smith Lake Friday afternoon has died. Cullman County Coroner Jerermy L. Kilpatrick identified the woman as Charmaine Howell, 64.

“I can confirm that Charmaine Howell passed away at UAB last night,” said Kilpatrick. “The cause of death will be determined by the medical examiner at the hospital.”

Howell went swimming at her home on Smith Lake Friday afternoon and shortly after, at 4:24 p.m., emergency responders received a call about an unresponsive woman in the lake behind a private residence located off of County Road 953.

Howell’s husband flagged down two young men on a Sea-Doo to assist him. CPR was performed until emergency responders could arrive on scene. Air Evac Lifeteam was called to the scene, but was unable to transport the woman as they had to continue chest compressions. She was transported by ground to Cullman Regional and later flown to UAB Hospital.
